Folks,
To summarise,
We had a gcc package installed but the complier needed
more................
this gave us all we needed.

Sorry if this is in the FAQ - must have missed it - thanks very much to all
who replied , very helpful - too numerous and too prompt to mention but you
know who you are.

cheers

Folks - hope you can help me out with this one - I will summarise.

we have a box running Solaris 8 with a minimal install
what software packages are needed off the Solaris CD's to get around this
error ?

bash-2.05# ./configure --with-perl --prefix=/usr/local/news
creating cache ./config.cache
checking for gcc... gcc
checking whether the C compiler (gcc ) works... no
configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot
create executables.

Cheers
