- Cron is pretty Industry Standard, It Is reliable as long as the clock
on the machine is reliable, and can be safely used for mission
critical jobs.
- Cron has a limit to the maximum number of "concurrent jobs". This
limit is defined through /etc/cron.d/queuedefs.See queuedefs(4)
You can adjust the number of cron jobs that will run simultaneously
with
the /etc/cron.d/queuedefs file. You can also look
in /var/cron/log to make sure that your cron jobs are running
properly.
- Many people run more than 200 cron jobs on their servers (i.e: apache
web servers for stat Generation).
- $UNIVERSE is a good commercial Cross Platform Job Scheduler

- ControlM (from BMC) this product can handle over 600 jobs

Subject: Max Number of Jobs cron can handle ?
Hi Gurus,
We are trying to use cron to schedule a mission critical job. My
colleagues said that cron is not reliable and had a limitation on the
number of jobs it can handle. They said that it only can handle 20 Job.
Questions in brief:
- Can I depend on cron to schedule a mission critical job ?
- What is the max number of Jobs cron can handle ?
- What are the popular products in the market that can reliably
schedule critical jobs ?
IWS.
Thanks.
Osama
