tape backup problem

I am experiencing a very subtle problem with one of my tape backup systems,
which has been working for many many years until yesterday. I have a
dual mammoth-1 single-ended tape in one enclosure, which has been working
for many many years, until couple month ago the top tape drive (scsi 4)
gave up for complaining scsi parity error. After replaced the tape drive
as well as the enclosure, it worked for another couple months until yesterday.
The top tape drive quitted for complaining scsi parity eeror again. At the
same time, the bottom tape drive works just fine. I have tried replace of
the top tape drive with a spare one, switched scsi cable, switched scsi ids
and no help at all: the top ones (tried 2) quit no matter scsi4 or scsi5,
but the bottom always works no matter what conmfiguration. I have tried single
tape enclosure and dual tape enclosure, always the same results.

Interested enough that I have found the top tape drive only quits on A
PARTICULAR disk partition from a remote server! If I take this partition
out from the backup list, the rest works just fine.

By the way, my system is Solaris 8 with 32bit and the questioned tape drive
is one the single SCSI bus without any other device.

Does anybody has this experience before? It seems to me that questioned
tape drive just won't handle some particular file partition. I feel it
might be a problem with the tape drive firmware if there is any. On my
Solaris system, I don't need to do anything to recoganize the Exabyte
mammoth-1 tape drive and I have a Exabyte EZ17 (mammoth-1) tape library
has never had this problem.

Any idea and thought will be appreciated.
