LTO2 small files backup slowly

I'm hoping someone has run into this in the past.

We have:
e250
512 MB of ram.
Solaris 8 MU7
Latest Sun recommended patches
Dual Channel SUN LVD card with the latest patch and software.
Fiber Gigabit Ethernet adapter
Sun L8 Autoloader with an LVD LTO2 tape drives.
Veritas Netbackup 4.5
Using disksuite mirrors on /, /opt, /export and /var

I copied some DB files to the backup server.

500MB (DB)files or larger backup at about 30MB/s that's within spec on
both the Netbackup clients(Larger e450's with way more ram and fiber ge)
and servers.

Smaller non DB files and Solaris OS files only seem to backup at
4MB/Sec-6MB/Sec.

I think i should make sure i'm at the latest disksuite patches. I have
multiplexing turned off and hope to leave it off.

Do you get slow backups with small files? What do you suggest i should
look at?
