jobs command

I have fortran compiler installed in my workstation. After I compiled my
Fortran file and get a.out in the dir, type a.out & to run the program.
Then type 'jobs' command but nothing shows up. But The jobs command should
list information on jobs currently running in the shell. Do I need to
configure my workstation to realize this?
