Dear Sun Managers,

I've an SF280R machine with Solaris 2.8 (Kernel patch
is at revision 18). There is no console and keyboard
connected to this machine and it makes my
troubleshooting more difficult.

Recently, I encountered frequent hung in this machine.
Machine is able to response to ping but when I did a
telnet to this machine, it hung at Escape character is
'^]'

I have checked the following files and it looks fine
to me.

# more /etc/inetd.conf
:
:
telnet stream tcp6 nowait root
/usr/sbin/in.telnetd in.telnetd
:
smsrvr dgram udp wait root
/usr1/sms/bin/smsrvr smsrvr
srlogin stream tcp nowait root
/usr1/sms/bin/srlogind srlogind

This machine has some third party smsrvr security
software and NISplus running in this machine.

# more /etc/nsswitch.conf
:
:
passwd: files nisplus
group: files nisplus
hosts: files dns nisplus
[NOTFOUND=return]
:

I had scanned thru the log file and there isn't any
error logged in Solaris /var/adm/messages. I had no
ideas what could be the problem on this.

(a) How can I troubleshoot this problem further from
here? Machine is able to response to ping but how come
there isn't any login prompt? What are the possible
causes?

(b) How can I isolate the problem to narrow down it
could be due to security software or NISplus running
in this machine.

(c) Since this machine is running NISplus. Could it be
due to the NISplus and how to determine?

I need someone out there to shed a light on this to
isolate my problem. Everytime I hit into this problem,
I need to power cycle the machine that I know I
shouldn't do that.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Richard
