thANKS TO many.
a) user WASN't in /etc/ftpuser
b) /etc/shells no longer contained /bin/sh
(very strange...)

The date on the file corresponds to the date user said it stopped working .
question is:

Symptoms were:
user couldnt ftp to box, even though password WAS correct
other users could get in...
