Interface Selection Algorithm for Multiple Default Routers?

I have a multi-homed machine that is connected to two routers (both of
which can reach the entire Internet).
In this example, let's say both hme0 and qfe4 are connected to nets that
can route to the Internet.

If I have two default router entries in the routing table, it appears
that all of the outbound packets (that need to be routed) will be sent
to the FIRST default router in the table -- and hence that physical
interface.

QUESTION: Is it possible to change the route/interface selection method
so that outbound packets (that need to be routed) will be sent through
the physical interface from which the inbound packets arrived.

This really is necessary because the routers are actually firewalls...

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
