Java needing X Server problem

All,

We have discovered that some of the Java code in our product is making X
calls on Unix platforms. On platforms where we have X capabilities i.e.
Graphical consoles this is not an issue as long as the DISPLAY variable is
set correctly.

However we feel that not all of our customers will have X capabilities and
they will hit problems when these X calls are made.

Looking at the java pages it seems this known problem is resolved in Java
1.4 but we have no plans to move to this version yet.

Do people know of ways of getting around this issue ?

I've heard of Xvfb (X Virtual Framebuffer) that HP recommended to us but I'm
not sure if this option is generic enough for us.

Another option is maybe to consider recommending something like cygwin to
our users to install on an NT box and mimic an X server. Has anyone used
cygwin and does it have an X server ?

Any offers of a possible solution would be gratefully appreciated.

Regards,
Mike.
