SUMMARY: Archive tape drive problems

Original question is below. Thanks to, well, me. No one else had
any useful suggestions, but after much digging at SunSolve I found
a bug report for Bug ID 4215896: "no tape loaded or drive offline
when accessing dds3 drive using compression".

The suggested work-around (there is no patch) is to enable
compression using the drive's switches (which I haven't tried yet).
There may also be a firmware upgrade to fix this, but since it's
not a Sun drive I won't mess with that.

The solution that works for me is to use "low density" mode (no
compression) by specifying device "0l". The native 12 GB available
without compression on DDS3 drives is enough for my purposes.
