xterm broken on Solaris 9?

 Environment: Ultra 60, Solaris 9 04/03, Recommended patch cluster from
              May 30 2003; CDE
 Keywords: xterm, vi, copy&paste

 Ever since upgrading to this release of Solaris, I am encountering strange
 problems when using vi in an xterm, to the extent that vi becomes unusable.

 I can reproduce it every time:

 - take a text file with a very long line, eg.

$ wc textfile
      1 69 1129 textfile
$

 - vi textfile

 - insert a string using left mouse button into the file using middle mouse
   button; if the string to be inserted crosses a line boundary, xterm locks
   up solidly.

 I believe that xterm is the problem here, not vi, because none of the menus
 will work after this (Control + {left|middle|right} mouse button).

 dtterm is not affected, but I prefer to use xterm.
