permissions changing "by themselves"

All, I am a little stumped and apologize in advance if this is an obvious one. I have a user running Solaris 2.7 and he has many scripts and executables that he only needs to use once in a while. He claims that files he hasn't touched in a while end up losing execute permissions, and that he never changes them. His umask is 002, and by his account this is happening "by itself."

Can you think of anything that could be causing this behavior?
