Strange file appearing

Hello,
I've got a weird problem and I'm curious whether anyone has experienced
something simelar. A user told me today that she had a strange unwelcomed
email folder. looking in her ~/mail directory I found a file named
.!dtother_user_name (where other_user_name is a username of another one of
our students).

This file was owned by the other_user_name, with 600 permissions. It
could have been placed in the first student's ~/mail folder, by
other_user_name as the ~/mail
directory had 777 permissions (which I of course changed). The date on
the .!dt file was 02/14/1953, and the contents are as follows:
4
..
5 5 1
sent-mail
180 5 4
sent-mail-sep-2002
355 5 3
Webmail_Trash
530 5 2

The possabilities I see are that the other_user_name user placed the
file in the first student's ~/mail directory, there is something weird
going on with the file system and the file appears there due to
corruption, or perhaps the dtmail application put the file there (although
I can't see why it would pick another user's home directory). I asked the
first student about giving
out her password or leaving a workstation unattended and she indicated
that neither have happened. I asked whether she had run chmod on her
~/mail directory and she was noncommital.

Has anyone else seen these .!dt type files laying around, with improper
user names and permissions? What are some suggestions for making or
breaking the theory that something could be causing file system flukes or
corruption?

Thanks as always for your help,
ivan Fetch.
