Solaris 8 ypserv -- client question

this is totally out of place, and I know it's mostly off topic, but
I'm desperate, and this list always seems to have a solution up it's
sleeve...

I'm running a NIS environment with a Solaris 8 system as the master, a
Solaris 8 system as the slave, and an AIX 4.3.3 system as an alternate
slave -- all of the Solaris systems are running the mid-May
8_Recommended and J2SE_Solaris_8_Recommended patch bundles --

my clients include HP-UX 11.00 & 11.11, AIX 4.3.3 & 5.1 & 5.2, Solaris
8 & 9, and Linux (RH 9) -- up to this point we've not had any
significant issues --

I'm trying to deploy a new HP-UX 11.11 system, and when it binds to
the Solaris 8 NIS servers, it is unable to access the maps --

a ypwhich shows the solaris 8 system
a domainname shows the correct NIS domain

a 'ypcat passwd' states that there is no such map in the domain

However, when it binds to the AIX 4.3.3 server, it works just
fine.... (problem being I'd like to get rid of that second slave and
live in a Solaris only world... and only using the 4.3.3 system
doesn't give me any redundancy....)

I'm at a total loss -- I've not been able to find any indication of
this problem in any of the regular places (sunmanagers archive,
groups.google.com, etc.) -- and I've lost a good 2 days worth of time
trying to find a resolution...

just hoping someone out there has a similar configuration, and has run
across a similar problem..

thanks!
