what are these mutex locks?

getting upwards of 30,000 of these as reported by lockstat
at an interval of 2.5 minutes

Adaptive mutex spin:
lock: 0x3000b505140
caller: cv_timedwait+0xb4

also getting upwards of 4,000,000 adaptive mutex holds
as reported by lockstat at an interval of 2.5 minutes:

any ideas as to whether or not this is high?
any pointers to good documentation on interpreting
lockstat output?
