Compiler problem(s) - gcc

I'm trying to install ssh - and have to compile it - I've obtained a gcc
package (as well as binutils) and pkgadd'ed them - now when I try to
./configure I get:
"the C compiler cannot create executables."

I've tried pulling a ./configure --includedir=/usr/local

to ensure it pointed to the right place with no luck.

I've googled this 10 pages down with no luck (but did say to check the
config.log). I did check a "config.log" issue but the google answer is to
install binutils, I've done that.

Does anyone know what I can do?

Thank you,

david rieger
