latest patch cluster kills access via ssh???

I installed the latest recommended and security patch cluster on a
couple of our less critical E250's yesterday in preparation for
installing on all our servers. This morning I got a call from someone
who "couldn't login with the same password used yesterday." I tried
myself and also could not get in. The only access is via open ssh from
our own subnet.

If I su from a session I already have open, I can login. i.e. my
password is correct. If I use putty or MacSSH from a PC or my Mac, the
login fails and the window blinks out. If I use ssh from another server,
I get "Permission denied, please try again."

I checked the host.allow and host.deny (ssh was compiled with
tcpwrappers), and this looks alright.

Needless to say, I'm not going any further with this patch cluster until
this is resolved. It is 8_Recommended from May 19, 2003.

What is it that is getting changed and not working with this patch cluster?
