450 pci ethernet configuration problem

Hello gurus,

I am having what seems to be a beginner problem that I am so far unable
to get past.
I am testing a new-to-me 450 in our lab with 2 pci ethernet cards in
addition to the onboard ethernet.
Solaris 8 is installed.
Everything works fine, including the onboard ethernet.

However I haven't been able to get a response from the pci ethernet
cards. I have:

created /etc/hostname.hme1 and /etc/hostname.hme2 with different
hostnames.
added entries to /etc/hosts with the new hostnames and new ip addresses
for each.
I accomplished a reconfigure boot.
I verified hme1 and hme2 come up during boot via dmesg.
Verified the acknowledgement of the existence of hme1 and hme2 with
ifconfig -a, they are both "UP" and have the correct ip addresses I
assigned them.

What am I missing here?

Thanks for your time.
Kevin
