Hello Managers,
This is a shocking news , but i don't know the sanity of the source.
My facility has witnessed around 25 IDE drive failures over period of one year mainly in ultra10's.

DETAIL DESCRIPTION:
Sun(sm) Alert Notification
7 Sun Alert ID: 42662
7
Synopsis: Sun Ultra 5/10 Workstations May Encounter Uncorrectable Data Errors on IDE Disks, if "shutdown -y -i5 -g0" Command is Used
7
Category: Availability
7
Product: Systems, Sun Ultra 5/10 Workstations
7 BugIDs: 4435428, 4380416, 4337637
7 Avoidance: Workaround, Patch
7
State: Committed
7 Date Released: 28-Jan-2002
7 Date Closed:
7 Date Modified: 05-Apr-2002
1. Impact
On Sun Ultra 5/10 workstations, use of the following shutdown(1M) command:
        shutdown -y -i5 -g0
might result in the IDE disk drive not getting "sync'ed" properly. If the disk is not "sync'ed" (see sync(1M)) properly, "Uncorrectable data Errors" are reported which may lead to unnecessary disk replacement.
2. Contributing Factors
This issue can occur in the following releases:
SPARC
7 Solaris 2.5.1 without patches 106197-06 and 103640-38
7 Solaris 2.6
7 Solaris 7
7 Solaris 8 without patches 108974-05 and 108528-03
Note: This issue only occurs with the internally supplied IDE drive on Sun Ultra 5/10 Workstations with use of the "i5" option to the shutdown(1M) command. Occurrence of this issue is not 100% and only occurs some times.
3. Symptoms
The error messages below may be seen in the /var/sadm/messages files upon boot up after using the "shutdown -y -i5 -g0" command:
        Jan 9 15:04:16 Ultra-10 unix: WARNING:
        /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/ide@3/dad@1,0 (dad1):

        Jan 9 15:42:07 Ultra-10 unix: dad1: disk okay

Jan 9 15:45:27 Ultra-10 disk not responding to selection

Note: In some cases, the fsck(1M) command may need to be run manually to repair file systems when the system is booted.

SOLUTION SUMMARY:
4. Relief/Workaround
The recommended workaround is to use the "-i0" option instead of the "-i5" option for shutdown:
        shutdown -y -i0 -g0
5. Resolution
This issue is addressed in the following releases:
SPARC
7 Solaris 2.5.1 with patches 106197-06 or later and 103640-38 or later
7 Solaris 2.6 with patches 106407-07 and 105181-31 and 105798-04 or later for each
7 Solaris 8 with patches 108974-05 or later and 108528-03 or later
Note: A final solution is pending completion for Solaris 7.
