Looking for script to "subdivide" directory of files (for CD burning)

Our users need a script to subdivide a directory of files into
separate directories that are each appropriately sized for burning
to a CD. Has anyone already created this wheel?

Doing this manually for 10's of GBs of data is quite tedious,
and 'cdrecord' doesn't allow you to span CDs <feature request>.

I've looked into DVD but it seems the software side hasn't caught
up to the hardware, at least for Solaris. Has anyone used the
ProDVD available from the cdrecord home page? Any other
recommendations, commercial or free?
