tip as dumb terminal help needed

I can 'hardwire' tip to a 2nd machine (ie for configuration) without issues
or problems. But I cannot sucessfully hardwire tip to a network device
(actually an old clariion array). The cable (null modem) is correct. I just
get gibberish. The device is functioning correctly because I can access
the device both with a true dumb terminal and even Windows95 Hyperterminal.

Settings are specifically 8 - 1 - EVEN, Hardware Flow Control

(To fix the parity thing, I did make a .tiprc file with "parity=even" and
"hardwareflow"

Does anyone have a tweaked /etc/remote to use a sun workstation eg ss20 as
a true dumb terminal.

Thanks
