sending mail with authentication (telnet session)

Hello all,

I am trying to setup Solaris 8 as a mail server. The mail should be
forwarded to our ISP via SMTP (authentication required). Any pointers
where to start and where to stop are greatly appreciated.

The first step is probably to perform a manual SMTP session using telnet
on port 25. All manuals start with this. However, none of the manuals
shows what sequences are to be entered if authentication is required. I
tried

# telnet auth.smtp.kundenserver.de 25
Trying 212.227.126.160...
Connected to mrelayng.kundenserver.de.
Escape character is '^]'.

How do I enter my username and password here for
auth.smtp.kundenserver.de to accept my mail? Thanks a lot in advance!

Regards,
