Using custom printer interfaces (Sol 8)

I have been asked to set up a printer using a customer written
interface. Following the man pages I entered

lpadmin -p <printer name> -i <full path to interface file> -s <remote
host>

but when I check the status of the printer I see no reference to the
interface:

lpstat -p AUSCL1 -l

printer AUSCL1 is idle. enabled since Apr 24 10:45 2002. available.
        Remote Name: AUSCL1
        Remote Server: <remote host>

I need to be sure that I have set up the printer correctly before I
ask the user to check it. Can anyone advise if I *have* done it right,
or am I missing something vital (other than a few brain cells!)

TIA, Chris
