Selective recursive delete of files

Hi,
I need a script that deletes files from subtree, which I give at the command line. The user should be able to specify a sub-tree to the script, but even within the sub-tree, the script should have some controls to spread out intensive directory traversal.
Basically I want to delete millions of unwanted files in the Netapp filers and doing delete at once on all of these files will slow down the performance of the Netapp filers ,so I want some controls to spread out the directory traversal while deleting files.
Any ideas or suggestions are most welcome.

Thanks,
Sanjeev
