NIS+ cheat sheet

I just love this. A couple people asked why, but then I get this.

We are currently planning getting off NIS+ for a couple reasons. First
up it is NOT installed and being used correctly. We have multiple DNS
subdomains however the shadow and passwd files are linked to the root
domain so users are not segregated by domain. In addition it needs to
be thouroughly cleaned up. The current production system was used to
design and build everything. The person leaving is the ONLY person with
a working knowledge of NIS+. When anything breaks he is the only one
who can fix it. If he's not available it has to wait.

As I've been digging into it I've been learning a good bit and I may be
able to clean it up and put it to correct use. Management however has
the ability to dictate that we move to LDAP as they only see the need
for centralized authentication, not all the features. As I learn more I
may be up for trying to change their minds, but at this point I don't
know if we need NIS+. It has many features and a lot of complexity we
just do not need. My wife doesn't need an Ram 3500 with professional
controntractors options but she likes to drive my F150 extended cab with
3rd door. It can haul her, the kids, groceries, etc without being
overkill.
