how to capture the thruput of the disks

Experts,

We will replace some storage configuration with another configuration. How
can I capture the thruput of the disks ?
I can copy over large file from one disk to another and capture the time
spent and count the speed of data transfer, but how can I really know what
is actually the thruput of that disks.
