I'm to cheap to own one, but have a couple friends that have done what
you're talking about. It works great. You end up with a handheld
device that runs kismet, nmap, and a myriad of other tools you'd never
expect to be portal.

I would recommend against the zaurus, though. The hardware is nice.
Battery life wasn't that great. The port of linux that they used
needs a lot of work to be usable.
