If you're familiar with Linux and want to pen test it give Nessus a try. It
has plug-ins specifically created to test SNMP. Make sure you get
permission to run this scanner on the network. Some plug-ins are considered
"dangerous" so you should take some time to learn how to use it and make
sure you test it before hitting any production equipment.
(Side question: Has anyone ever crashed a server when the dangerous scans
are disabled?)
Info turned up by the Nessus plug-ins will include the community string and
info that can be gathered from it. So with a public community string you
might be able to walk into your manager's office and throw down quite a bit
of info about his network because of this vulnerability.

This is my two cents, there are a hundred other ways to test SNMP as well.

Subject: snmp
HI,
I am responsible of the security in my company.
One of the sysadmins told me that they use in one of
the networks Snmp and that the community is public.
I want to pen test this issue meaning that I want to
find ways to retrieve from the devices info, and show
the IT manager that he must change the community.
The reason that I want to do It my self is that I
don't believe in the way that is just going to him and
tell him..." its written in the internet that we must
change public community to something else.
So how or from where do I start ?
Thanks
juan
