You're probably correct in assuming that it's "silly LM hash
cracking".However, that has nothing to do with syskey protection.
Syskey provides essentially no protection now that the algorithm has
been reverse engineered. Look into bkhive and samdump2; it's quite
simple to boot a live linux distro, dump the un-syskeyed hashes (all
you need are the SAM and SYSTEM hives), and then crack the "silly LM
hash"--which is still on by default after all these years.
