Packer testing

Barcajax,

It depends on whether or not you are just trying to hide a file in a
jpg, or actually have it execute disguised as a jpg. The latter I
don't know how to do, but if you just want to embed an executable in
an image file, you could use something like Forensic Toolkit or even
the freeware Autopsy which comes with most live security distros.
Even Hex Workshop will allow you to do this but you've got to embed it
in the right place so that the image will still display, while
covering up the existence of the executable. Typically you would need
to place it at the end of the image file. If you place it after the
image header, portions of the image will appear corrupt or not display
at all Hope this makes sense to you...

I want to try this out but am worried about downloading malicious files disguised as packers. Can anyone recommend a legit/safe packer that I can use for my testing purpose? Thanks.
