RE: CS-Mars appliance

If it's correct that MARS has an Oracle database, I have a lot less
confidence than I used to in the product. It's paradoxical that a
"security" product would contain an Oracle database. Oracle isn't just
terrible at patching vulnerabilities, they seem to be outright dedicated
to producing an insecure product. They usually wait years to patch
after a report, and that's when they DO patch, which they often don't.
Maybe the host firewall protects some of the vulnerabilities, but with
so many I'm sure plenty are exploitable. The box should be in a secure
network, but it just isn't acceptable to include a fragrantly insecure
component in a "security" product. I don't want to drop names, but this
news tips the scales toward their Snort-based competitor as the better
choice between the two.

Sorry I couldn't respond earlier, but I was actually working with Cisco
on a CS-MARS issue.

The CS-MARS box is a modified version of RedHat, an old 2.4 kernel, and
JBoss 3.2.7 application server. Some measures are taken to secure the
underlying OS, like a firewall, etc.

See http://spoofed.org/files/CS-MARS_jboss-exploit and the two recent
posts to Full-Disclosure regarding some new CS-MARS issues.
