Could be something as simple as John the Ripper. It's brute force (and
can include dictionary), but much faster than trying to go through a shell
service since it just looks at the stored salt and hash for a given
password, and tries to duplicate it cryptographically. Even a mediocre
CPU can spot the weak passwords in very short order.
