Penetration Testing a Firewalled Network

('binary' encoding is not supported, stored as-is) I too have a question regarding pen-testing a firewalled network. How would someone be capable of scanning and attempting to determine internal IP addresses beyond the firewall when pen-testing across the internet. Is it as simple as defining static routes to push all packets to the destinations firewall(gateway)? Maybe I am overthinking this issue but so far I haven't been able to be able to come up with an acceptable answer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
