Slightly simpler, you can pick up a telephone recording box
I had a cheap one that hooked into the handset, but I believe the deluxe
model goes right into the wall jack

The hardware shouldn't be difficult at all, I'd like to see how the
software works

I was once told that you could record a 14.4k data stream, and play it
back into a modem to demodulate both sides, but I can't imagine how it
would be done.

Pretty easy- just take the analog pair and send it in- however, when I
made
a cable for this, I put a TR80 transformer (IIRC) in-line to keep the
ring
voltage from frying my box.
