Varsity software/compilers

Penn participates in the SGI Varsity Program. This program provides a variety of software in addition to IRIX and updates to IRIX.  This page will describe the varsity software and how to install the varsity software package for 1999-2000 for Penn, (the Developer Package) on an IRIX 6.5 machine.  Note: to use this software you need to pay the yearly fee to ISC and get access to the Varsity software CD's.  I like to think of the varsity software as comprising three categories, the compilers and code development software, web and graphical development software and the system functionality software.  In my experience in the Chemistry department, the software in the compilers category are the most frequently used.   For more information on this program, see SGI's varsity home page.  Some of the products mentioned here require a license key.  Get this from the same person you got the software from.

Note: SGI has re-organized its software as of 6.5.  Some products that were available to us only through Varsity are now standard with 6.5.  See below.

System functionality Software

Installing this varsity software is usually pretty easy.  The software is usually bundled onto its own CD, or a CD with several products.  Place the relevant CD in the drive and load the software distribution "/CDROM/dist" from inst or Software Manager.  This will load the default selections.
