Craig,
We've been doing this for a while, more with rp5470 (L-class) than N
class, but it does (usually) work as described.
Failures do happen, and it is possible to hang or crash the server.
(we've had both occur)
Best of luck with it.

Subject: [HPADM] External DVD for N4000
I purchased an external DVD ROM drive for my N4000, which will attach to
the
onboard Ultra SCSI 2 port. This port has a light and label on it called
"diffsens",
if it's on then its LVD, if off, single ended. Is this port a true
auto-sensing LVD/SE port?
Can I simply plug the DVD into it and turn on the external device, then
run an ioscan and see it?
Any help is appreciated.
