Hi,

There's a better workaround. The default settings for login
have the @ and # characters defined as kill and erase.
Until recently these could not be changed. However, if
you have the devicefile /dev/ttyconf, you can change the
default settings for all tty devices prior to login:

   stty erase "^H" kill "^U" < /dev/ttyconf

Now the backspace key works as expected during login
and password prompts and the @ symbol is just another
character.
