Thanks a lot to all of those who have responded.
The Pb has not been solved yet, but following is what I've done to
understand what was going wrong exactly.
The message said a lot, but I didn't know how to interpret it.
<date> <server> vmunix: SCSI: Read error -- dev: b 31 0x022000, errno: 126,
resid: 2048,
<date> <server> vmunix: blkno: 8, sectno: 16, offset: 8192, bcount:
2048.
1/ b 31 means that this is a disk Pb
$ lsdev 31
Character Block Driver Class
188 31 sdisk disk
2/ Address 0x022000, indicates disk c2t2d0
$ ls -l /dev/dsk | grep 0x022000
brw-r----- 1 bin sys 31 0x022000 Feb 23 2000 c2t2d0
This disk is a SEAGATE internal disk. It is mirrored.
3/ errno: 126, generic "power failed" message that means that the disk
stopped responding to SCSI commands
PS: this information comes from Steve Bonds but I still don't know where he
got this information from... if someone knows, thanks to tell me.
After the server reboot, the disk seems to be fine however but for how long
... ?
Here are the tests I made to check the disk state:
$ ioscan -kfnC disk
$ pvdisplay ?v /dev/dsk/c2t2d0 (NB: Physical extents status must be:
current)
$ diskinfo -v /dev/rdsk/c2t2d0
$ lvlnboot ?v
# Command line of the Support Tool Manager
$ cstm
# To test the bad block errors of this disk.
$ dd if=/dev/rdsk/cXtXdX of=/dev/null bs=2048
All this tests returned a valid disk state but man told me that before a
disk crashes errors show up days/months before...
Before concluding the disk is nearly dead, I'm going to apply LVM and SCSI
patches and see then how the situation evolved.

Since the 15th of September, we're getting the same error message in
/var/adm/syslog/syslog.log file:

This error is reported more than every seconds.
I'm trying to find where the Pb is, but I'm quite new to HP-UX (I know
SunOS pretty well, but HP-UX not at all...).
This HP server has 2 internal disks and a EMC disk array attached to it.
This disk array is monitored by EMC and they told me that this Pb is not
related to it.
The Pb should then come from the internal disks (SEAGATE T318203LC).
PS: how to check if these disks are SCSI or IDE one ?
Does anybody have ever experienced a such Pb ?
