Hi Rajwinder,

Thanks a lot.

Your second reason is the root cause of my problem.

password for root user was consisting @ . And that was in my ignorance that when I recreated users I keep all the passwords simple only alphabets.

Thanks,
pankaj

Hi Pankaj,
There can be two reasons for this

1. The existance of /etc/securrty file. If this file exists, then you cannot direct logon to root. If you want to root login from console then add /dev/console line in this file.

2. Also if your root password consists of @ or # characters, then also you can direct logon. These characters are special escape characters.

Regards,
Rajwinder

        Hi,

I have tried giving 777 to /etc/profile. But no luck.
        /etc/nologin doesnot exists.
        pwck returns nothing
        I use telnet for login.
/dev/tty's and pts have permision crw-rw-rw

Here in mail I have hacked password and user field in /etc/passwd.

Finally I have deleted users and recreated it with other names , and now I can telnet using newly created users.

Only thing I leftout is still I can not do direct login on console/telnet using root . I must have to login using other user name and than su .

        thanks to all
        pankaj

        /etc/passwd is in good health.

        root:aaaVrhDa:0:3::/:/sbin/sh
        B:KBN:101:0:admin user,,,:/home/admin:/usr/bin/sh

        C:oj3JY:103:20:A A,,,:/home/C:/usr/bin/sh
        D:hqc:104:20:C,,,:/home/C:/usr/bin/sh

Direct login for B,C, D says login incorrect. But when say
        "su -B"
from A's session, can login fine.
Which logs can be useful to me to troubleshoot ??

                     thanks stuart
