Thankyou to all who responded on this one.
Due to time pressures we resolved this problem by upgrading the PDC to
version 42.11 and then made 100% sure that we had the 700/96 green screen
terminal reset to default settings. We then reinstalled HP-UX 10.20 from
scratch and the problem did not come back.
Whether the problem was related to the version of PDC we had running or an
odd setup we may have had on the 700/96 terminal (or a subtle combination of
the two) I'll never know.
Sorry this isn't much of a summary but technical curiousity just had to give
way to commercial pressures in this instance.

I searched the archives but no luck on this one.
Just installed HP-UX 10.20 on a D Class (old I know but that is the
requirement).
When the system boots we get:

\VOLUME GROUP "/DEV/VG00" HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY CHANGED
The problem is that the console switches into this all uppercase mode (stty
lcase) from the ioinitrc script all the way through the rest of the boot
process. At the end of the boot process the login prompt appears as normal
(i.e. in lower case) and we can login no problem.
I've never seen this before. There must be a subtle tweak to put things
right. Any ideas?
