Many thanks to the following people who replied amazingly quickly to my
inquiry: ryan, Bill Hassell, Brett Greer, Kristopher March, David Lodge,
Rita Workman, Bart Schelstraete, Stuart Abramson, Chris Medaglia, Patrick
Hayden, and Jeff Cleverley (and anyone else I have forgotten).
I believe the problem turned out to be that although I had a live network
connection to my HP workstation via DHCP, I had not bothered to configure
the workstation's name in DNS anywhere and decided to just pick something
out of a hat. Apparently that will work all right under Linux, but not
under hp-ux ... X seems to be much more sensitive to doing things correctly
under hp-ux.
Thank you all for your help.

The original post:
A few weeks ago I got 11 installed on my 735 box (many thanks to Chris
Medaglia for sending me the media). The install seemed to go well, and I
set up hp-ux for dhcp since I have a WinXP box that handles that. Well, it
*seemed* everything went okay, but when X comes up and goes to the CDE
login screen, and I type in a username and password (either root or my
personal account) the window disappears, there is some disk gnashing, and
then the login screen pops back up. I can't seem to get any further than
this. Does anyone have ideas?
