[HPADM] SUMMARY Omni 4.1 to Data Protector 5.0 Upgrade

All,
I'd like to thank the following for their responses.
Mike Lavery
Mike White
Yngvi Thorfinnsson
Charles Eggensammer
Steve Illgen
and the "Pro from Dover"
Rita Workman

Most had the same (low) opinion of OB 4.1 and its GUI. Rita went as far as
to say she stopped the deployment of 4.1 because of problems.

Mike L writes; "DP5.0 is basically omniback 5.0. Its only a name change. All
commands are the same and the upgrade is smooth." (He didn't like the unix
gui either.)

Yngvi said the upgrade process is painless - "Just follow the
documentation.". He's done at least 3 of them for customers and lived to
tell the tale.

Mike W says; "We just finished rolling out OmniBack 4.1 after EXTENSIVE
inhouse
testing and working with HP to fix issues. I do not expect to migrate
to DP 5.1 (now in Beta) for at least 9 months to a year."

Charles E says he'll be upgrading by the end of the year.

Rita wrote; "I put a couple of my boxes up to 4.1 and absolutely hated it !
The big servers I left at 3.5 and let HP know how really 'not good' 4.1
is. I have discovered 3.5 runs on 11i just fine.
So post the summary....and maybe, just maybe...I'll give it a try."
        (Rita, I despise the gui on 4.1 but my DB problems from 3.5 are a
thing of the past. I can live with an annoying gui.)

And from Steve Illgen, the most detail. Here is his entire response.
"I have and I couldn't be happier. DP 5.0 is a significant improvement over
DP 4.1.

The upgrade is painless. My only suggestion is to apply the latest DP 5.0
patches before you upgrade your clients, then upgrade the clients.

The most common quirks I've experienced and the workarounds include:

        1. Sometimes, the 'xomni' manager application still runs even after
closing the session. You need to manually kill the application from the
server.

        2. Every so often, modifications to a backup datalist are not made,
or are somehow changed, even though it appears they have been accepted. You
need to do ensure the modifications have been accepted, either through the
manager, or, better yet, by viewing the datalist files in
/etc/opt/omni/datalists (yes, I even modify these manually myself when the
need arises).

        3. If you are installing DP client software to a Linux system (esp.
RedHat), you may not be able to install as the 'root' user. This is because
'rsh' and 'rexec' in some versions of Linux do not allow access as root. The
best way to remedy this is to:

                a. create a /usr/omni directory on the Linux system.
                b. Change the owner to a non-root user.
                c. Perform the client install from the client server using
the username and password of the non-root user.

                d. The import will fail at this point. You need to create a
file called /etc/xinetd.d/omni with this information:

                service omni
                  {
                          socket_type = stream
                          protocol = tcp
                          wait = no
                          user = root
                          server = /usr/omni/bin/inet
                         server_args = inet -log
/usr/omni/log/inet.log
                          disable = no
                  }

                e. Add the entry 'omni 5555/tcp #OmniBack'
to the /etc/services file
                f. Send a SIGHUP to the 'xinetd' process to accept this
settings.
                g. Change ownership of all files in /usr/omni to root:root.
                h. Import the Linux client from the DP Manager.

That's about it. I'll let you know if I forgot anything.

I hope this helps."

..it certainly has.
For the most part I've not been put off by my pending upgrade. The upgrade
to 5.0 appears painless according to our friends. The gui is still a stinker
apparently and I'll be doing the upgrade at management's discretion
probably by the 3rd quarter. It shouldn't be too bad with the proper
preparation.

Thank you all again for your time and comments.

Best Regards,
Frank

Subject: [HPADM] Omni 4.1 to Data Protector 5.0 Upgrade Questions

All,
Like the rest of you, I've gotten an "offer I can't refuse" from HP
regarding the discontinuance of Omniback and the introduction of Data
Protector 5.0.
Has anyone made the upgrade to DP 5.0 from Omni 4.1?
If so, what kind of problems have you encountered and are there any
'gotcha's' of which to be aware ?
Have they finally fixed that inferior and unstable user interface they
dumped on us with 4.1?
I'm running Omni 4.1 on HPUX 11.0.
Just received the manuals and CD's for DP 5.0 and have it on the back
burner.
As always, will publish any response to this question.
Thanks and have a good day.

Regards,

Frank J. Walter Jr.
