Thanks all for wishing me the best with the stuff. Most replies indicated
hardware failure:
Worn-out or broken tape, most likely at the beginning of the tape since this
is the part thats 'used' the most.
Dirty or worse tape device, subject to replacement.

I was hoping someone could point me to a process that might occupy the tape.
I found `lsof` but I could not operate it on device-files. Does someone have
an idea how to do that? (and where to get a lsof for HP-UX 11.0 on N or
Lclass systems?)

I found out this morning that I could operate the handle and remove the tape
as usual. Hopefully the device is not broken. THen I found there is no usage
record of the tapes, it is possible that it is used in the backup cycle
since the machine is in use.

My actions to a useable solution:
Scratch the malfunctioning tape, I did this the destructive way ;-)
Replace all current tapes in the backup cycle
Initiate a cleaning action in the backup procedures: clean the device just
before every monthly backup

Thanks a lot,

Subject: [HPADM] Tape stuck in drive
Hi
I have a dlt8000 device with a tape stuck in it: All lights on the device
are flashing. After pressing the unload button, the tape appears to be
rewind (that's according to the sound of the device) but after a while
(start of tape?) the lights all go back to flashing mode. Operating the
handle seems to crach stuff so that is to be avoided. `mt offline` reports
"device busy"
The last known action on the device is last nights backup. That once crashed
near the end of the backup so it might have hit the end of the tape. This
crashed backup is a dump of a file from a remote machine. At the machine
with the tape drive, there is a `dd` process that changes the blocksize of
this file. This process is gone hence the tape shoule be free.
In the past, I've had similar problems with old hardware and both 10.20 and
11.0. This old machine had to be rebooted to be able to eject the tape. Due
to the nature of the current problem machine, this reboot is not acceptable.
What is happening with the tape device?
How can I stop it now and eject the tape?
How can I avoid it in the future?
System at hand: L-class and N-class hardware, HP-UX 11.0, DLT tape device
Previous problem machines: D-class hardware, HP-UX 10.20 and 11.0, dds tape
device
