Thanks to everyone who replied.

The general consensus is that DLT III will work but for critical backups,
more capacity and full performance you should use DLT IV.

No reported problems like this with fbackup/frecover, but one similar
problem with OmniBack using DDS2 / 3 media.

All,

I've encountered problems with restoring from DLT III media in a DLT8000
drive. I asked our hardware support company to take a look at the drive
because I'd tried three tapes which all failed with I/O errors. The
hardware engineer said that you'll never be able to use DLT III tapes in a
DLT8000 - I disagree with this because I've used DLT III before and not had
a problem. The DLT8000 is in an N4000 (HP-UX 11.0) and they're hot
swapable so I swapped drives and the fault followed the tapes, a subsequent
fbackup on the faulty drive in another machine worked but reported errors -
again using DLT III. The hardware engineer, again, said its the media. I
then successfully restored over the network from a DLT8000 in a D390 (HP-UX
11.0), I read another tape and this also checked out okay. I cannot
convince the hardware engineer that the drive is faulty - he said I was
just lucky with the restore from the D390.

The tapes were created using fbackup and the restore using frecover, I used
the -N option the verify a second tape.

I've checked the HP support site and this archive but I can find a relevant
article, so I would like to ask you the following questions, and I'll
summarise :-

Can DLT III media be used in DLT8000 drives ?
Can anyone point me to a web site with DLT standards for both media and
   drives ?
Has anyone had this type of problem with fbackup / frecover ?
Would the frecover over the network work when a local frecover fail ?
Could a mismatch in firmware cause this problem ?

Any and all comments welcome.

TIA,
Lee.
