[HPADM] SUMMARY: A-500 Question...

Well, I finally found the quotes for these A boxes that were purchased.
These were purchased in April of 01, just when the 550 mhz processors came
out AND each A box has 6 GB of RAM (all based on what PeopleSoft
recommended). They were to be used as Application Servers in a 3 tiered
environment. At the time, each CPU was $6135 (x 8) and 1 GB Ram Module was
$6375 (x 8) and 2 GB Ram Modules were $13755 (x 8), so that is why the cost
was so much. If it were me, I would have bought the 1 GB memory module and
then gone with DataRam for the remainder and well over 2/3 less of the HP
cost.

Anyway, thanks to all who provided some insight.

Cheers,

Jim

Subject: [HPADM] A-500 Question...

Folks,

I have a question about cost for A-Class series boxes. I came into a
company where I inherited 4 A-500 (550 mhz processors) an L-2000 (440 mhz
processors) and a few other boxes. We are currently looking at reducing
some cost structure, so I went back and pulled the old PO's for the 4 A500's
and the L2000. What I found blew my mind. The L-2000 was ~$62k, and that
included a 1/9 Tape Library. Each A500 was ~$70k. L2000 was less then each
A500.

My question is, are A500's that expensive? I find it hard to believe that
they are, especially since their isn't any scalability to them.

Cheers,

Jim
