[HPADM] SUMMARY: HPUX 11i - do I need it? (Pursuing certification)

Original Question:

I have a D270 with 128Mb RAM, and want to use this to
(re)develop my HPUX skills for certification on HPUX 11i. I
spent several years as an admin on 9.x/10.x boxes some time
ago and now want to rekindle my HP Unix skills.

    My questions are:

    - will this machine run 11i satisfactorily? (I have upgraded
the firmware to cater for 64 bit, rev 38.40) - it is already
    running 11.0 32 bit

    - is there any real advantage in upgrading to 11i?

Status:

I've now got my D270 running 11i. As I want to get
certification in HPUX 11i, I decided it best to have access
to all the "new stuff". I upgraded the firmware to the
latest (41.11 - PF_CULU4211) and the (fresh) install went
smoothly. Also applied the December 2002 Quality Pack and
Hardware enablement patch set. It's only intended to be a
sandbox for myself, so it should be fine. Thanks to all who
    responded.

Responses:

Bill Hassell:

With only 128 megs of RAM, it will be fine for sysadmin tasks
but most applications like Oracle or ProEngineer, etc, will
    be swapping a lot.

11.0 is circa 1997 (that's ancient in computer years), while
11i was release Dec 2001). There are a large number of new
features found in 11i but if you never use them then 11.0 is
    fine.

As always, you need to load the latest Quality Pack and
Hardware enablement patch sets from the Support Plus CDROM
    (or download from the ITRC).

Ilan Green:

11.i has better file system throughput and support for the
new HW like RP8400, SD, RP7410

Eef Hartman:

No, too small a memory (I would advise a minimum of 1 Gb for
11i) and too slow a processor (PA8000, 11i is recommended
from PA8500 upwards). Although the last may not that much of
a problem if you just use it for testing purposes, no real
    production.

No, convert it to 11.0 64-bits and you can do most of the
things with less of a memory load, compared to 11i.

Radhakrishnan:

u can install hp 11i 32 bit os in this without any problems.
    i have checked it already.

Bob Vance:

IMHO, 11i (11.11) would be a wise choice (if you have the
disk space -- it requires a larger system disk than 11.00)
since it has a fair amount of new stuff in it.

    I have 11i running on a D210 just fine.

If you can afford/find extra disk drive(s), a good setup is a
dual-boot scenario. In fact, I have the D210 set up to boot
    all 3 of 10.20, 11.00, and 11.11, with a large common disk
where I keep source code, common scripts, home dirs, etc.
