Hi

Thanks to all

General consensus being - too many variables or the lack of information.
I don't think this is the best forum for detailed storage infrastucture
planning :)

One point that did surface ( from - IIan Green)
LVM stripping on RAID 5 HDS/XP disk array - recommended across RAID groups
(yep that's what we have) then concatenate LUNS within the same RAID
group.

---------- original question -------------------------------------------
Currently running stripping on the logical volumes - its a DBA thing, they
like stripes. The LVM strippping is on raw parttions
On the backend in the RAID susbsystem running RAID5. Now you have software
stripping on hardware stripping - some people have named this - "plaiding".

My research to date on stripping-on-stripping/plaiding is that the jury is
out on this. Its neither a good thing or a bad - do at your own risk
because too many variables to get a definitive answer.

There may be some advantage in LVM stripping in that the writes across the
LUN strip set although sequential is not dependent upon the write
completion of the previous disk block i.e a sequential operation with
parallel writes.

Currently we a maxing RAID subsytem backend ports and SAN management want
to reduce the LUN count. That means combinig LUNs, since disk storage is
going to reworked there was a suggestion of reducing the LUN count at the
same time, actually reducing our workload in the process.

Ques: Has anybody done a LUN amalgamation with no perfomance degradation
where the LUN count was reduced by 50% on sw-stripping on hw-stripping.

My gut feeling is that it should make no difference.

Regards
Jim McDonald
