Thank you to: Rita Workman, Bill Hassell, Baran YURDA, Thomas V. Myers and
many others for your responses.
Pretty much everyone suggested using JFS at all times(benefitial performance
wise), unless specified otherwise by Software Vendor.
Please see below for some of the messages received.
Thank you again,

Tom Myers's Response:
-----------------------------------------
The va7x00 doesn't do anything to speed up the recovery process for
filesystems if the host server crashes. You still want to user JFS for
filesystems to reduce the time required for fsck.
In an "autoRAID" such as the 12H or the va7x00, the disk array controllers
maintain internal RAID groups using both RAID0+1 and RAID5. It operates
something like a HSM in that the most recently used blocks are kept in the
faster RAID0+1 (mirrored) space and the rest migrate to the RAID5 space. As
the array fills up, space is taken from the RAID0+1 space to allow the RAID5
space to grow. You configure the limits on how large each of the RAID types
can grow.
Cheers, Tom

It is much more reliable and much easier to maintain and recover from when disasters strike. It will also give you other abilities that you cannot get when using hfs (ie. extending logical volumes on the fly, taking snapshots of a file system, etc). As far as the difference between Autoraid and Raid 0+1 are concerned is that when you setup a disk array lun using Raid 0+1, that lun will always be used using RAID 0+1 regardless of the data usage (ie reads or writes). AutoRaid does not let you specify which RAID level to use on which LUN, you simple create the lun and the VA will determine which RAID level to use based on the free space, data usage, etc. So you see, using AutoRaid can be more efficient and less hassle that using a disk array with no AutoRaid. If you want to specifically setup, lets say, a 5 disk LUN using RAID 5, you will not be able to do this using the VA, you have no control over which RAID levels are used with which LUN (hence the name AUTORAID). I hope this answers some of your questions. Joseph Salzer ------------------------------------ And OF COURSE Bill Hassell's Response: ------------------------------------ Always use JFS. HFS is a great filesystem but the length of time required for fsck after an improper shutdown and the lack of mountpoint controls for performance tuning make JFS the filesystem of choice. > what are the major differences between AutoRAID > and RAD1+0? AutoRAID lets the VA system manage your RAID levels automatically, migrating data from one RAID to another based on demand and available space. If you use most of the disk space, then mirroring will be migrated to another RAID level in the background. That's why you want to not use all the space in an AutoRAID. Read the owner's manual on the VA system for details and load the VA management tools onto your system for better performance. -- Best regards, Bill Hassell ------------------------------------ ORIGINAL QUESTION: Hello everyone, If I am using an external Virtual Array, does it make sense to setup file systems as journaled (JxFS) or just HFS? also, what are the major differences between AutoRAID and RAD1+0?
