Firstly, sorry about the delayed summary.
Thanks to everyone who responded (there were lots of responses!)
Solution:
To configure the IP based console (the one you telnet onto), you need to be
logged onto the GSP.
Once logged on the GSP you need to type LC for LAN configuration.
Once you have the networking parameters all sorted out, you need to type EL
to enable the LAN connection.
Once that's all working and you can get the connection to the GSP card, you
may have to type ^Ecf which is basically Control+e and then cf (it should
say something like "Bumped user")
