Oracle DB has it's own memory buffers so buffer cache is usually not very
helpful where Oracle DB is the only thing running. I once heard that over
400 MB for buffer cache tends to have a diminishing return. I don't know
if that's still the case - I know in some cases (like NFS servers) more
buffer cache helps. We tend to size it to a percentage that results in
about 300 to 400 MB for buffer cache (we do very little NFS serving here),
so I would be inclined to make it 2 or 3 %. I also heard that it manages
it somewhat more efficiently if it's not variable so it's best to keep
dbc_min_pct and dbc_max_pct the same. All of ours are set the same for
this reason - then it just allocates that on startup and never changes.
Hope this helps.
